As lockout problems go, this one is not so major. Not that that makes it any less of a frustrating situation for you, but it is a straightforward problem that has simple solutions. The problem is most likely one of the three following issues.

Issues

The most common issue is when you accidentally lock your car keys in the trunk. While this is an embarrassing blunder, it happens quite often. Another issue is that your trunk lock could be broken. This can occur naturally over time with wear and tear or be due to blunt force.

Lastly, your key fob could be unresponsive due to dead batteries or incorrect programming. This problem can most likely be remedied by replacing your batteries or, in some cases, your key fob. Now that you know why you cannot open your trunk let's look at the different steps you can take to help.

Methods

A quick note to keep in mind is that most of the actions you can take to solve this problem will only be temporary. You will need to consult a professional to have the actual problem-solving in more complex situations. Also, before you try any method, do your best to remain patient and take your time to prevent any undue damage to your locks.

Re-check

This step may seem unnecessary, but it is important. You may find that the problem solves itself if you try again. Maybe the first time you hit the trunk lock button, it didn't register, or maybe you hit the wrong button.

So, take a deep breath and re-check. Try opening the trunk manually with your key, from the internal trunk button, and with your key fob. You can move to the next step if you have tried this multiple times.

Find Another Access Point

In this step, it is important to clear your head and think of all the different ways you can access your trunk. Many cars have access to the trunk by pulling down the seats; in many larger cars, the trunk is accessible just by reaching over the backseat. If this is the case and you have locked your keys in the trunk, then just access the trunk inside the car and reclaim your keys.

Accessing the trunk this way can work temporarily, but if your trunk lock is broken, you will want to get this repaired as soon as possible.

DIY Solutions

The internet is full of tips on dealing with every problem you can think of, but I caution you to be wary. Many DIY solutions can cost you more than calling a professional and/or cause further damage than what was already done.

Make sure if you try any DIY solutions that you do your research and that you know the potential complications of any method you try.
